First, director Ridley Scott announced that the sequel to "Prometheus" will not be called "Prometheus 2" but "Alien: Lost Paradise," until most recently that the director confirmed the official title will be "Alien: Covenant" but fans should know that the new title signals that the "Prometheus" sequel is part of a prequel trilogy to the "Alien" film franchise.
Master Herald, in its report, that the mere title alone, "Alien: Covenant," shows how Ridley Scott want to make an early connection to the "Alien" franchise. Scott, however, previously said that there will be more sequels to "Prometheus" before it leads back to "Alien." Although it is apparent that Scott is not only pursuing a sequel, but an entire prequel for his original work, "Alien."
The official synopsis of "Alien: Covenant" released by Fox further confirms the sequel's connection to "Alien." The official synopsis (via Den of Geek!) reads: "Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS-and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world-whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition."
So when would the filming for "Alien: Covenant" actually begin? According to Master Herald, the screenplay for "Alien: Covenant" has just been completed and that the movie is not at a pre-production stage. Meaning, filming for "Alien: Covenant" will most probably start in January next year.
"Alien: Covenant" will see the main characters going back to the "home world" of the creators or the engineers of both the alien and human species. The sequel will be directed by Ridley Scott and will be penned by Michael Green and Jack Paglen. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender will be returning for the sequel.
