Legendary and Warner Bros. have reportedly confirmed the release date of the planned "Godzilla 2" movie in an official statement.
"Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018," the statement reportedly said.
Together with the release date announcement, the giant studio will also bring to introduce new monsters to the upcoming Kaiju film claiming that it will introduce a new Cinematic Universe like that of Marvel's superhero movie series.
"Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary's pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho's Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah."
Mothra, who was introduced in 1964's "Mothra vs. Godzilla" movie is a monster resembling a moth.
Meanwhile, Rodan, who was first revealed in the 1956 Toho film, is a gian flying fire-breathing creature with the ability to radiate powerful shockwaves.
King Ghidora on the other hand, made its first appearance as the the villain in Japan's 1964 film titled "Ghidora: the Three-headed Monster."
Director Gareth Edwards will return to helm "Godzilla 2" movie following his highly acclaimed work in the first "Godzilla" under Legendary.
Together with "Godzilla," Legendary is also working on new Kaiju movies including "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla vs. Kong."
Screen Rant added that both films have a scheduled release date as well.
According to Legendary Pictures CEO, Thomas Tull, the studio is actively gearing up for a big new universe focusing on the iconic Kaijus.
"Audiences really responded to Godzilla," he said in a statement.
"Today, I'm excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I've always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we're pleased to be announcing that and more."
"This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures."
Introduced in the 2014 "Godzilla" movie, "Godzilla 2," "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla vs. Kong" will all be connected by the Monarch organization.
"Kong: Skull Island" is set to hit theaters on March 10, 2017 followed by Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla 2" on June 8, 2018.
Meanwhile, "Godzilla vs. Kong" release date is said to be set sometime in 2020.
