Google is finally bringing cellular support to Android Wear with the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE being the first in line to have the said feature.
It started with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Now, Android Wear smartwatches will automatically switch to a cellular connection when not in range.
"As long as your watch and phone are connected to a cellular network, you'll be able to use your watch to send and receive messages, track fitness, get answers from Google, and run your favorite apps," per the official Android Wear blog.
Reportedly, users will even be able to call and be called from a smartwatch even without a phone nearby.
Launched last week, the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE will be the first smartwatch to take advantage of cellular support.
According to the South Korean tech firm, the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE features a round 348ppi P-OLED display on a "hairline-etched stainless stell body."
"The three buttons on the right side of the smartwatch provide quick access to shortcut settings, LG Health and other apps," LG said in a statement.
The Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE is now available for pre-order via AT&T and Verizon, according to The Wall Street Journal. Both carriers will reportedly provide LTE service for the smartwatch.
AT&T priced the device at $200 with a two-year data plan or $15 per month on a 20-month installment plan. Existing subscribers can add the device to their plan for $10 a month.
On the other hand, Verizon is selling the Android Wear smartwatch for $500 off-contract and $450 on a two-year contract.
The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition is now available in the US, to be followed by Europe and Asia over the next few months. It is said to work with devices running at least Android 4.4 and iOS 7.0 though celllar features will vary.
