Pantone's color for 2014 is Radiant Orchid or pink, a press release on the company's website reported Thursday.
"While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination," Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said in a statement. "An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today's society. An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm."
Pantone employees choose the company's color each year based on happenings in the entertainment world, motion pictures being produced, mobile art collections, popular artists who have just hit the scene, and infamous places to travel.
The company then uses its color of the year to make products such as cofee makers, and buying choices for a variety of fields. These include fashion, home and industrial design, product packaging, and graphic design. The company is known for watches, iPhone cases, mugs, stationery, and posters.
The color emerald was selected in 2013. This was followed by tangerine tango in 2012, honeysuckle in 2011, turquoise in 2010, mimosa in 2009, blue iris in 2008, chili pepper in 2007, sand dollar in 2006, blue turquoise in 2005, tigerlilly in 2004, aqua sky in 2003, true red in 2002, fuchsia rose in 2001, and cerulean in 2000.
Pantone has an exclusive Pantone Plus Series book available as part of its 50th anniversary.
The company also has many metallics, pastel crayons, and neons. Artists and color enthusiasts can examine and work with color with Pantone's software such as its Pantone Color Manager Software. Cotton, paper, and nylon products are also available.
