Yota Two-Screened Smartphone Release Date: New Device Available Now

| By

The world's first two-screened smartphone is out now BBC News reported Wednesday.

The device has a liquid crystal display on one side, and a digital ink screen on the other where users can view items on their phone without turning it on.

"The typical user picks up and activates their smartphone more than 150 times a day," Yota devices chief executive Vlad Martynov told BBC News. "Why? Because users worry that messages or information they need or want are hidden behind their phone's black screen. This is a huge distraction and can impede meaningful interaction with our friends, families and colleagues."

The phone also has a 1.5 gigahertz dual-core processor, and 12 megapixel rear camera for 499 euros or $675.75 united states dollars.

"The YotaPhone is an ambitious concept and although it will be considered a gimmick by many we believe there is merit in the design," Ben Wood, a mobile analyst with research firm CCS Insight told BBC News. "With many smartphone owners struggling to make the battery on their device last a whole day, the option to have a secondary screen that uses little or no power to capture and display a 'snapshot' of the main screen could be attractive."

The second screen has several uses, which Yota feels could make headway for other technological advances associated with the device.

"Some are just nice touches along the lines of displaying a love heart when a text message arrives with the words, I love you," Wood told BBC News. Others are more intriguing, such as using the e-ink display for advertising. This could open up some interesting new business models in future."

The news also follows the introduction of more slender e-reader devices made by E-ink dubbed Fina.

The device weighs 50 percent less, and is not as thick as screens on devices available today.
