Donald Trump's 'SNL' Hosting The End Of His Political Campaign? Journalists React To His TV Appearance

| By

This week, Presidential candidate Donald Trump hosted "Saturday Night Live (SNL)" and despite the show being known for its stellar jokes, monologues and parodies, it seems that many found the whole night a complete waste of SNL comedians' talents and air time.

Despite protest rallies staged days before Donald Trump's SNL appearance, the presidential candidate did not hold back during the show - he even poked fun at the angry protesters outside of NBC where the show is being taped.

Larry David, returning as Bernie Sanders, heckled SNL as Donald Trump delivered his opening monologue, a riff on a protest group's offer of $5,000 to anyone who tried to sabotage Trump's gig.

"Trump's a racist!" David yelled, adding. "I heard if I yelled that they'd give me $5,000."

"As a businessman, I can fully respect that," Trump said.

After the show, reviewers on different publications had no praises for Trump or of the whole SNL episode.

"After watching this epic miscalculation, though, it's clear that nobody wins; not Trump, not the show, and certainly not us," Joe Berkowitz of Vulture wrote.

The jokes and the writing in general was so bad, The New York Post even theorized that "it looked like 'SNL' was trying to sabotage Trump."

Meanwhile, comedy writer Daniel Kellison fired shots at NBC for putting their comedians in a position that was "embarrassing" and for giving a "dangerous racist" like Trump a chance to be humanized.

"Just a reminder to anyone out there trying to make a living in comedy: all that matters are ratings," Kellison wrote. "Not what you write, or create, or put your heart and mind into, or certainly not your integrity. Just ratings."

"To everyone who had to work on SNL tonight, I send heartfelt empathy," he said. "Tonight your employers embarrassed you; let you down and compromised all you have worked your entire careers for, in hopes of humanizing a dangerous racist - all for a measly Nielsen point. Whereas a week before you may have felt you were living your dream? Tonight it sucked to be you."

Meanwhile, former SNL cast member Nora Dunn said Donald Trump hosting the show was an "endorsement" in which the cast members get the short end of the stick.

"Was I disappointed that Trump was going to host? Yes, but not surprised," Dunn wrote for The Huffington Post. "The host of Saturday Night Live is still perceived as an endorsement, and what else can it be?"

"If I was currently on the job I'd have trouble making Trump look good or funny or even worse, harmless," she wrote. "That's not the job of any comedy troupe. But it's really all about ratings, and finding a host can be difficult when who you are looking for has to be trending."
