‘New Characters, New Worlds, New Civilizations’ Await Fans In Upcoming ‘Star Trek’ TV Series

| By

In time for its 50th anniversary, Star Trek is returning to the small screen on January 2017, CBS Television Studios announced today.

The new TV series, which will be exec-produced by Alex Kurtzman (writer and producer of the 2009 "Star Trek" and 2013 sequel "Star Trek: Into Darkness"), will be primarily shown on CBS' digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service, CBS All Access. Co-producing the new Star Trek TV Series will be Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof.

"Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," CBS Television Studios President David Stapf said in a statement.

"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series had gone before-directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access," said Marc DeBevoise, CBS Digital Media Executive Vice President and General Manager.

CBS Global Distribution Group President and CEO Armando Nunez promised fans a new adventure awaiting for the new "Star Trek" TV series, saying, "We can't wait to introduce 'Star Trek's' next voyage on television to its vast global fan base."

Accordingly, StarTrek.com wrote in its website: "The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

But by introducing new characters, iO9 commented that it doesn't mean old characters can't show up. Capt. James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, after all, had become synonymous to "Star Trek." iO9, in its report, also noted that the upcoming TV Series will not be related to the upcoming film, "Star Trek Beyond" and that the TV series may not be set in the same alternate universe created by J.J. Abrams. The report added that with "Star Trek's" huge universe, possibilities are endless.
