Gadget addicts can expect Qualcomm's Toq smartwatch Dec. 2 Information Week reported Monday.
"The Toq smartwatch showcases key Qualcomm innovations, such as Mirasol always-on, low-power display, AllJoyn interactions, and WiPower LE wireless charging, that will define the emerging wearable category," Paul Jacobs, chairperson and chief executive officer of Qualcomm told Information Week. "Like a traditional watch, Toq displays information at a glance with no on/off switch. And paired with a smartphone to receive notifications and content, it allows the watch to merge our physical and digital lives seamlessly. Leveraging these and other industry-leading technologies, we and our partners will enable new product opportunities and consumer experiences."
The $349.99 device is only going to be available from the company itself, and not in retail stores.
The gadget will enable people to complete tasks normally done on hand held devices from their cuffs such as take calls, text messages, input calendar items, among others.
Users can also look at messages, and reply using built-in responses. The watch also has AccuWeather data for people to check the weather forecast, a calendar so they can keep track of commitments, and stock ticker to monitor market prices. The Toq will also not have to be charged up for many days. This compares to Samsung's $299.99 Galaxy Gear smartwatch 24-hour charge.
Monday's news is the latest development since the manufacturer announced plans for its own version of the watch. The device has a camera, a 1.63 inch display, speakerphone, and a feature that allows users who misplace their phone to locate it.
Samsung introduced its own version in September but it has not taken off as expected The Wall Street Journal reported last month. The manufacturer is also building electronic eyewear, which comes installed with apps. It can also transmit information to and from smartphones.
