Many people were surprised when Bill Murray decided to make a cameo in "Ghostbusters 3" because he has expressed his hesitation before.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dan Aykroyd revealed the reason why his co-star does not want to do a sequel.
"I never begrudged him not being in the third movie, though I wrote a nice part for him in 'Hellbent,' where the Ghostbusters go to hell," Aykroyd said. "He's got very high standards and a high bulls**t detector."
Ivan Reitman also revealed that the actor who played Peter Venkman was not interested in doing the second installment so what more a third one.
"He doesn't really like the idea of sequels, and we were burdened with that at the start. We got close a few times. Bill kept flirting," the director said.
When Harold Ramis who played Egon Spengler in the horror comedy blockbuster died, the producers and director knew that it was time to do a different version.
"For much the same reason that the original Ghostbusters couldn't really be the stars of this movie, including Harold who passed away, it was time to get fresh blood in there," Reitman explained.
"I think Paul's idea of the gender shift was a very smart and fresh way to get everybody to re-look at this in a new way," the producer added.
Paul Feig announced early this year that "Ghosbusters 3" will feature four funny women - Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
The "Bridesmaids" director received both positive and negative feedback regarding the female version of the 1980s megahit. Most were unhappy about the decision because they still wanted to see the original cast.
Thankfully, the 53-year-old filmmaker and the female lead stars were able to convince some of the pioneer actors to appear in the reboot.
"None of us lobbied to be in the third movie," Aykroyd said. "We all felt that this Paul Feig concept was so strong that we didn't have to be in it. But he called me. And of course, I said, 'I want to help in any way I can.'"
The 63-year-old actor also revealed that he was the one who called up Bill Murray for the cameo.
"I was surprised and delighted, because it was hard to read whether he was going to approve of the thing or not," Dan Aykroyd said.
"It's nice to have him back onboard. Now that he's done this one, maybe he would come back and play Venkman for [another 'Ghostbusters'] at some point," the actor teased.
Who knows? Dan and Ivan may finally push through with another version of "Ghostbusters 3" which could feature the original cast.
