The latest "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 episode titled "4,722 Hours" shed light about the Jemma Simmon's time from the mysterious planet.
She was there for six months and came back to earth suffering from trauma.
A lot of things went on in that six months. Turned out, Elizabeth Henstridge's character didn't spend her entire time there alone. She met a guy named Will Daniels who landed in the planet 14 years before her.
The two didn't get along easy but as time passed, they learned to be with each other. They worked together to find a way out of the planet and along with it is the development of some romantic feelings.
Simmons is supposed to be together with Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) who tirelessly did everything to bring her back to earth. His dedication somehow should been returned, right? Unfortunately, Simmons still sees him only as a friend. Fandom was shocked about this, so is Henstridge.
"I know! That's what I was screaming when I was reading the script," Henstridge said in an interview with E! News after the airing of the latest "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 episode.
"For right now, they're putting all the issues in their relationship to the side because there's a bigger task at hand and the countdown is on to get [Will] back. Jemma doesn't know what happened to him, she doesn't know if the monster got him at the end, so there's a real time crunch on this one. So there isn't the time to go into the minutiae."
When asked if Simmons is genuinely in love with Will Daniels (Dillon Casey), Henstridge said she is.
"She is. I think that they've been through something so enormous and when she had absolutely lost all hope, not even of getting home, but just of living, he was there and said the right thing. And I think in that moment, everything changed," she said.
"Their connection is a very visceral one, and it's about surviving, and it's very primal. So, it's a very different love than she has for Fitz, but yeah, she's in love with him. And that's the only reason she's asking Fitz. Because if she just kind of fancied him, then she would never ask Fitz to do that, but the stakes are very high."
