Sarah Silverman Silently Goes Through Depression; Says Boyfriend Michael Sheen ‘Classes Her Up’

| By

Emmy Winner Sarah Silverman recently sat down with James Lipton for Bravo's "Inside the Actors Studio," where the actress shared about her "Masters of Sex" co-star and boyfriend Michael Sheen and about the depression she has to go through being a comedienne, People reported.

Silverman and Sheen had been dating for more than a year already and in the interview with Lipton, the actress could not help gushing over her "real-life boyfriend" saying, "He really classes me up and I just pull him right down to my level unfortunately for him. I could go on and on."

Talking about "Masters of Sex," Lipton asked Silverman to describe her co-actors. Sarah Silverman only got praises for Lizzy Caplan but when it came to Michael Sheen and his role, Silverman candidly said, "Bill Masters is played by the sexy, gorgeous, astoundingly brilliant-I'm just stalling because I can't remember his name-Michael Sheen, who is also my real-life love."

But despite having a happy relationship with Sheen, Silverman admitted that she has been dealing with depression. In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, the 44-year old comedienne shared, "I've lived with depression and learned to control it, or at least to ride the waves as best as I can."

"I'm on a small dose of Zoloft, which, combined with therapy, keeps me healthy but still lets me feel high and lows."

"I still have downward spirals, days when I have to drag myself onstage to do stand-up or I'm just tweeting Morrissey lyrics from my bed. But there's one thing I know that I used to not know: It will pass," Silverman further said.

On why comedians tend to become depressed, Silverman told Time in an interview, "I think it's because to need to become funny usually comes from a way of surviving, a survival skill of childhood, a means to get through some kind of adversity."

"That's why we all have some element of sadnesses or darknesses in common, whether we bring it to the stage or not at all. That's the reason people become funny is to overcome pain. The most basic is the fat kid making the fat joke first," she added.
