‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Christmas Special Won’t Be Airing This Year? [VIDEO]

"Sherlock" season 4 Christmas special has been one of BBC's most anticipated premiere this year. However, it seems that fans won't get to see the one-off special in 2015. The good news is it's coming very soon.

True to his show creator Steven Moffat's word, it won't be airing on Christmas day, but it will reportedly air during the season. In fact, fans won't be able to watch it until New Years day.

BBC recently released an extended trailer for the episode, titled "The Abominable Bride," revealing its air date at the same time.

This time, US viewers won't have to wait for the show to premiere on the other side of the pond thanks to PBS. According to Screenrant, the Jan. 1 air date has been announced for both its UK and US release. This will somewhat lessen piracy and general grumbling from US watchers about spoilers on Tumblr and Twitter.

Aside from the simulcast premiere for the "Sherlock" season 4 Christmas special, BBC also secured a deal with Shanghai Media Group to show the episode in cinemas around China.

Check out the synopsis from PBS (via Entertainment Weekly) below:

"Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Imitation Game") and Martin Freeman ("The Hobbit") return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street."

Set in the Victorian-era this time, Moffat also promised a "less brattish" genius detective and a "more uptight" Dr. Watson.

"It's like we checked the books and discovered we'd set it in the wrong time period by mistake and it's like we're correcting it for 90 minutes," Moffat previously told BBC News. "We're really proud of it, we think it's a real cracker. But that'll be it until series four."

The next season will reportedly start filming sometime in April. Meanwhile, watch the "Sherlock" season 4 Christmas special trailer below.
