Asus ZenWatch 2 Has Hidden Speaker And A Future Android Wear Update Could Make It Useful

| By

A bit of sleuthing revealed that the Asus ZenWatch 2 comes with an integrated speaker prompting many to speculate that a future Android Wear update could support the hardware.

"Asus ZenWatch 2 has a speaker like the Huawei watch so I think Google is going to include speaker support in a future update," Google+ user David Sears said in a post where he showed the disassembled device.

Currently, Android Wear doesn't support speakers, according to 9to5Google. Then again, it's not strange for devices to be launched with hardware before the software that enables its use comes out.

As the website noted, Google released an Android Wear update that supports Wi-Fi for smartwatches already in the market.

"LG also recently announced the Urbane 2 smartwatch with hardware support for LTE, despite the fact that Android Wear does not actually support it yet."

As Sears pointed out in his post, the ZenWatch 2 follows the Huawei Watch as another smartwatch with a hidden speaker.

But what could the Asus ZenWatch 2's speaker, or any other smartwatch running on Google's OS for wearable devices be used for?

"We could see it being useful for audible notifications and voice features during navigation, or perhaps audible feedback from Google voice searches," Phandroid said.

As for music playback, the website thinks it's better to use a smartphone for that unless you have one of the few smartwatches that don't need to be paired with a smartphone to work.

Android Headlines speculated if integrated speakers could also be found in other smartwatches and that manufacturers included the hardware for future-proofing.

In any case, an Android Wear update should roll out before the year ends which "so we would know exactly which of the smartwatches integrate a speaker and some of its uses," per the website.

The Asus ZenWatch 2 is now available for purchase via the Google Play Store and other retailers for $149.
