Android's 4.4 Kitkat smartphone could gear more towards television rather than actual phone capabilities Korea's ETNews reported Friday.
"Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean," the company said on its website. "As everyone finds chocolate so tempting, we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kit Kat!"
The news comes after Google did away with its TV component, and is heavily depending on the Kitkat's television capabilities or Smart TV platform, due out later this month.
Images of the new phone software, which Google uses on its mobile platform show a television screen that uses Miracast. According to Web Pro News, this is a wireless HDMI cable used to display an Android smartphone's screen on a user's television screen. The capability also displays graphics in high definition and also project's the phone's audio.
"The next OS has greatly improved its utilization in TV," a source told tomshardware.com. "In particular, there will be many changes in the interface between smart devices and the TV."
The launch of the phone will not be as big as ones Android had with previous models of the smartphone because the company has only made small changes to the devices' user interface rather than how it functions. These include its app launcher, notification bar, and color changes CNET reported.
Instead the company will be focusing on its Android TV product, and how it can operate in sync with other Android devices CNET reported.
"I heard Google say the next OS has greatly improved its utilization in TV. In particular, there will be many changes in the interface between smart devices and the TV," an industry insider told ETNews.
Android is used to operate more than one billon smartphones and tablets.
