PBS App Launch: Networks Shows Now Available On Xbox 360
Xbox 360 lovers can now watch Public Broadcasting Service shows on the channel's new app, now available on the game console PC Magazine reported.
"This launch is an important next step in our strategy to make PBS content available through a variety of platforms, while maintaining the connection between the viewer and their local PBS station," Jon Brendsel, vice president of product development for PBS Digital, said in a statement. "While PBS member stations will always be the first place to find high-quality PBS programming, the launch of our Xbox 360 offering recognizes that viewers are looking to engage with their local station in the time and manner they choose."
Users can watch popular PBS shows such as "Frontline," "Nova," "American Experience," "Austin City Limits," "Masterpiece," "Secrets of the Dead" and original video made in the network's digital studios on the new feature.
The app also allows users to watch their local PBS stations for localized content along with viewing the network's national programs.
"PBS is a great addition to our expansive lineup of entertainment experiences on Xbox 360," Kathy Styponias, general manager of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, said in a statement PC Magazine reported. "The addition of PBS is another example of how we're continuing to expand our catalog of entertainment so that Xbox Live members can find all of their favorite experiences in one place."
Xbox 360's latest gadget follows Amazon's recent success in gaining rights to stream PBS's popular television show "Downton Abbey." The acquisition hurt Netflix and Hulu from continuing to perform well in the online digital streaming area.
According to PC Magazine, the network did not announce if the show was included in the app. The show is however set to run for a fourth season in January.
The network created the app with help from design firm, Digital Flare out of London.
