'Outlander' Author Diana Gabaldon Talks About How She Was Able To Write The Novel Series

| By

"Outlander" season 2 air date is reportedly set on March or April next year. That is quite long given the fact that its first season started in August last year.

Well, patience is a virtue. Quench that excitement by reading the novels where the show was based from if you still haven't read it. Especially with the fact that author Diana Gabaldon went through a long way to finish the book.

The American author said she started as a science woman before breaking into the fiction novel writing.

"I was always a fairly good writer because of reading so much though I was a scientist in a previous incarnation," Diana said in an interview with the Daily Record UK.

"I have a Phd in Quantitative Behavioural Ecology and I worked as a Professor for some years. When you do that you write a great deal for academic purposes, text books, articles and all kinds of things so I had done a great deal of writing."

She also revealed pursuing creative writing profession was a bit hard for her because of her family background.

"From the age of eight I wanted to be a novelist but I came from a very conservative family background," Gabaldon continued.

"My father would say to me, 'You're such a poor judge of character you'll probably marry some bum, so be sure to get a good education so you can support your children'. So I got into science which I was good at."

She pursued her dream anyway. Now at 63 years old, she is recognized as one of the best novelists in modern times with her "Outlander" being adapted by Starz starring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe.

"I still wanted to write novels and when I was 35, I said to myself, Mozart was dead at 36 so maybe you'd better get started. "Outlander", or "Cross Stitch" as it's been called in the UK, is what I wrote for practice."

She added: "When I finished it, my agent sent it to five editors he thought might like it.

"Within four days three of them had called back with offers to buy it so it was off to the races. He was able to negotiate amongst them and got me a three book contract. It was beyond exciting and rather numbing because I hadn't expected that in a million years.

"I didn't know how to react so I asked my agent, 'What do I do?'

"He laughed and said, 'Open a bottle of champagne' because what happens now is out of your hands."
