‘South Park’ Season 19 Episode 3 ‘The City Part Of Town’ Tackles Gentrification As Show Changes

| By

This week's "South Park" season 19 episode 3, titled "The City Part of Town," sees the show tackle gentrification amidst its creators trying to reinvent it.

Episode 3 continues on the trend set by the last two episodes, that of the Colorado suburb's cultural makeover.

"In 'The City Part of Town' the people of South Park attempt to boost their town's image by updating lower income areas into vibrant cultural centers," Esquire said.

This pretty much means the McCormick household will have to share space with swanky new bars and upscale restaurants.

For the website, this parallels what's been happening to many American cities but stays in line with the theme set-up by season 19's first two episodes.

"South Park's physical changes are the next logical step in its more to becoming PC - an ongoing theme so far in this season," it said.

Far from being just social commentary, Den of Geek thought the way creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker used gentrification in episode 3 means they're also targeting themselves for change.

For the website, "South Park" season 19 episode 3's plot is a "display of self-awareness for Matt and Trey to admit even they need to tinker with the format if they want to stick around."

Noting how shows like "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" aren't talked about "unless someone huge is making a guest appearance," the "South Park" creators will have "to take risks" to keep the show relevant, according to DoG.

Episode 3 also brought back Tuong Lu Kim and City Wok as a side plot.

"As the people South Park gravitate toward the 'curious fusion delights' of SoDoSoPa, Kim wonders if people have lost their taste for his City food and his offensive accent," Esquire said.

As the website noted, the show is changing. Den of Geek wondered if "South Park" would go back to its roots by the season 19 finale.
