South Korean automaker Hyundai issued a recall on certain Sonata and Accent models after problems that may lead to failures were spotted in the vehicles.
According to Consumer Reports, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall for 2011 and 2012 model Sonatas.
Reportedly, affected units were built at Hyundai's Alabama plant between Dec. 11, 2009 and April 12, 2012. The models have either a 2.0-liter turbo or 2.14-liter four-cylinder gas engine.
Per the NHTSA, the engine crankshaft may have been left with metallic debris.
"If the debris is not completely removed from the crankshaft's oil passages, it can be forced into the connecting rod oiling passages restricting oil flow to the bearings."
Should this happen, the agency said the engine might stall which could lead to a crash. Symptoms include a lit engine warning lamp and a knocking noise from the engine. An estimated two percent of vehicles have the problem.
Sonata owners affected by Hyundai's recall will be notified by Nov. 2, 2015 and will be instructed to contact their dealer for a service appointment, according to CR.
If needed, Hyundai will replace the engine at no cost and warranties will be expanded to 10 years or 120,000 miles for both original and current owners. Owners will be notified again when parts are available.
As for the Accent, Hyundai issued a separate recall for the sub-compact due to a faulty brake-light switch. Car and Driver reported that owners may not be able to disengage cruise control by stepping on the brake.
"Besides that, the brake lights may not illuminate, and owners with automatic-transmission-equipped models could face trouble trying to move the shifter out of park," the website said.
Models built between March, 1 2009 and Feb. 11, 2011 are affected by the recall.
Hyundai will replace faulty brake-light switches on affected Accent models.
