As soon as Disney announced its intention of creating a "Mulan" live action film, fans of the 1998 animation flocked to social media to express their excitement.
They also discussed their fears for yet another "white-washed" movie or at least, the wrong casting for the lead role.
A petition, demanding Disney to look for a Chinese actress for the job, was started earlier this year. "Tell Disney You Don't Want A Whitewashed Mulan!" via Care2 Petitions already has 79,404 supporters as of press time.
According to MoviePilot, the film studio might have heard the collective voices of "Mulan" fans, offering the role to "Once Upon A Time" star Jamie Chung.
The report has not been verified by Disney yet but if the "Sucker Punch" actress will indeed get the part, she won't have a hard time internalizing the role. She's already playing Disney's warrior princess in ABC's "Once Upon A Time."
Chung isn't the only current TV star being linked to "Mulan" live action film, either.
Previous reports suggested that "Glee" star Jenna Ushkowitz was said to have been eyed for the role.
"Among the potential talent for 'Mulan,' virtually none possesses the combination of star quality, relevant age, musical talent, and beauty Disney would need for its lead," a tip sent to Mogul reportedly said. "It's unsurprising that fans are rallying behind Ushkowitz who, thanks to her long tenure as Tina Cohen-Chang on 'Glee,' has significant credibility with this film's target audience."
On the other hand, Constance Wu from "Fresh Off The Boat" was also pegged by Fusion and Buzzfeed as another possible strong contender for the role. Meanwhile, fans pushed Ming-na Wen, who voiced Hua Mulan in the original Disney animation, to reprise the role despite her age not quite fitting for the role.
Who do you think would be the perfect protagonist in Disney's "Mulan" live action film.
