The "Final Fantasy 7" PS4 remake has garnered so much attention since it was confirmed at E3 2015 earlier this year. One point of contention is the game's battle system.
Back in August, Franchise Herald reported that director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed "dramatic changes" for the remake but it's not exactly clear what he meant. Should Square Enix update the original's turn-based combat or make it action-oriented?
"It seems like the safest bet to keep the die-hard fans happy would be to stick to a turn-based battle system, not necessarily exactly the same as was in the original game, but one familiar enough to appease longtime fans," GameRant said.
But if Square Enix is copying each element of the original "Final Fantasy 7," what's the point of making a remake? Nostalgic fans can simply turn to the "FF7" iOS port or even the upcoming PS4 port of the original.
"Almost all of the recent releases in the 'Final Fantasy' series feature a more action-oriented combat system, and that's exactly what you should expect from the 'Final Fantasy 7' remake," PrimaGames said.
Noting Nomura's preference to such a battle system, GameRanx said "it could help to make the battles in the game feel more engaging, and look similar to the impressive fights" in "Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children."
An action-oriented battle system could also help the "FF7" PS4 remake appeal to a younger audience who are used to such an experience, as Franchise Herald previously reported.
So, how would the remake's battle system look like when it comes out?
"Unless Tetsuya Nomura and his team can dream up something extraordinary for the battle system in 'Final Fantasy 7' remake, it's probably best for Square Enix to use [an updated] version of turn-based combat in [the game]," GameRant concluded.
Square Enix is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the battle system of one of the most highly-anticipated games.
The "Final Fantasy 7" PS4 remake currently doesn't have a confirmed release date.
