'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 3 Episode 1 Postmortem: EP Discusses Twist No One Saw Coming

| By

"Brookyln Nine-Nine" season three episode one wasted no time in introducing its new captain.

Bill Hader's Capt. Seth Dozerman took over as Captain Holt's replacement. He instantly looked like a good compelling character when he burned Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) the moment he arrived.

Spoiler alert though. The whole of "Brookyln Nine-Nine" season three episode one provided twenty minutes of funny television but there is one twist probably no fans saw coming. Bill Hader's character did not last that long. He died due to heart attack.

Just when he is starting to become an interesting figure in Precinct 99, he passed out, then passed away. There is a hype about the arrival of equally funny actor Bill Hader. Turned out he will only be in the show for just one episode. Series co-creator Dan Goor said that although Hader is the first choice, his schedule somehow got in the way to keep him longer in the show.

"That idea came about fairly early on in pre-production," Goor told Entertainment Weekly when asked to explain the pilot episode's twist.

"The first version of it was that we would have a new captain at every act break. And then we eased up on that because we thought that wouldn't be that fun to watch. Then Bill Hader became available, and he really was our first choice for the new captain. The reality was, due to his amazingly busy schedule and his incredible exploding career - exploding in a good way, that sounded bad - we just didn't have him for that much time. And so it just seemed like a fun, funny way to exploit his comic potential over the amount of time that we had him for."

Hader himself loved the idea.

"He thought it was hilarious. And he loved the idea of doing the heart attack. He was very into it," Goor added.
