PlayStation 4 3.00 Update To Make PS2 Games Playable? Sony To Make PS4 Backwards Compatible?

| By

Earlier this month, the PlayStation 4 3.00 update was announced bringing many new features to Sony's gaming console. Leaked screenshots suggest one of them could make it backwards compatible with PS2 games.

Last week, PlayStation Lifestyle got a tip that PS2 games "War of the Monsters" and "Siren" can be played on the PS4 with 3.00 firmware beta. Alleged screenshots of the games were posted on the website which you can see here.

The tip follows an earlier PSL report from the day before of a leaked screenshot of "Siren." It has since been deleted for reportedly being fake.

In the absence of an official announcement from Sony, PSL suggested to take the leaks as a rumor. If it does hold true though, "PS4 owners are surely in for an exciting adventure as many have already demanded the company to make PS3 games playable on the current-gen console," TechNewsToday said.

The website pointed out that Sony previously turned down PS4 backwards compatibility. But seeing the success the feature brought to Microsoft's Xbox One, the Japanese tech giant may change its mind.

On the other hand, Sony has confirmed PlayStation 4 3.00 update features including an increased cloud storage capacity of 10GB for PS Plus members and the ability to stream games to YouTube, according to the PlayStation blog.

The 3.00 update also brings an Events section which lets players stay up-to-date with their games. Favorite Groups is an addition to the Friends app to "make the process of getting a game session up and running even easier."

Communities brings together people of the same gaming interests while Now Playing allows players to see what their contacts are playing and join them. Request to Watch is a notification that can be sent to watch a gaming session.

Other additions include Stickers, Screenshots, an updated Live from PlayStation and the ability to share 10-second video clips to Twitter.

Whether the PlayStation 4 3.00 update makes the gaming console backwards compatible with the PS2 remains to be seen. Sony is expected to launch the update in the coming weeks.
