The third season of ABC TV series "Agents of SHIELD" is more ambitious than its first two. As reported by earlier "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 spoilers, the return will focus more on superpowered creatures collectively known as Inhumans.
This means higher requirement for convincing visual effects and overall production.
Unlike Marvel's cinematic universe, fund for television projects are much lower. AoS executive producer Jeffrey Bell is aware of this and in an interview with Comic Book Resources, he said this is one of the challenges "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 faces.
It sounds like viewers are going to see more and more Inhumans as the season progresses. Creatively, what kind of an opportunity is that? By the nature of Inhumans, as we've seen in the comics, the powers can kind of be anything -- how much fun is that as a writer? It feels fairly wide-open.
Bell: It is, but we have to do a couple things: Can we afford to produce this effect? Because every time last year Gordon went "bamf!," we went, "Wow, that was [expensive]." We want to do things we can do well, and that are visually interesting, and ideally serve as a metaphor somehow.
Bell also addressed what obstacles are there in introducing Inhumans.
"One of the challenges with Inhumans is, outside of the royal family, there aren't a lot of characters who are super well-known," he said.
"I think there's an opportunity for us to develop that. Even Ms. Marvel in the comics, is technically an Inhuman -- I think Marvel's relying that more and more to explain how characters became powered. We've got some new ones coming this year, and I hope people like them."
Among the key Inhumans is Chloe Bennet's Daisy Johnson. Bennet said in a separate interview with CBR that Daisy has more profound role now in the SHIELD.
"I think it's a little bit different. Coulson's obviously still the director, but Daisy's definitely his right-hand lady. She's been put in charge of finding new Inhumans," she said when asked for "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 spoiler on her character.
"She's definitely taking that task very seriously. I don't know what else I can tell you. [Laughs]"
