Snapchat Rainbow Filter May Come Back; Update Actually Brings New Lenses, Pushes Old Ones Out

| By

Chances are, you've probably grown fond of the new Snapchat rainbow filter and disappointed over its abrupt disappearance. The good news is it may still come back.

Multiple reports have sprung up saying that Snapchat removed the beloved filter (also known as lens) but the company has since clarified what happened.

"A new Lens appears each day, with one dropping off when a new one is added," a Snapchat rep told TechRadar.

As it stands, the rainbow filter and scary face lens were pushed out of the queue. Taking their place are "[moustache] man, gossip mag, angry face, slapped face, scared face, heart eyes and one that cracks the screen," according to the website.

"Without the ability to make yourself regurgitate augmented reality rainbows, do the other choices even matter?" IGN said.

The website did ask if Snapchat will bring back rainbow filter and was reportedly told, "You'll have to wait and see."

An update from last week brought the filters to Snapchat meaning users who have taken a liking to sending pictures of themselves vomiting rainbows was cut abruptly short. It also brought in-app purchases to the app for the first time. Users can now purchase Replays for $3.99 for three.

The filters come after Snapchat bought San Francisco-based startup Looksery for $150 million earlier this month, according to Business Insider.

"Looksery uses facial recognition software to essentially photoshop live video in real time," the website said.

In the update, Snapchat used lenses to allow users to add filters to their selfies before sending them. According to Bustle, many were disappointed that the rainbow filter disappeared owing to its popularity. Some even took to Twitter to express their sentiment.

"No use crying over spilled milk, though - there's always chance that Snapchat will bring the rainbow lens back into rotation," the website said.

There may still be hope for Snapchat's rainbow filter.
