Before the premiere aired, Whovians were greeted with news that Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald is leaving "Doctor Who" season 9. Now that a spot in the Tardis has opened up, speculations are rife as to who will be The Doctor's new companion.
According to Unreality TV, "Coronation Street" star Michelle Keegan is now the bookies favorite to replace "The Impossible Girl."
"Michelle is just what the Doctor ordered. As far as the odds are concerned, she'll be entering the Tardis sooner than later as his assistant," bookmaker Ladbrokes' rep Jessica Bridge said, as quoted by the website.
But the 28-year-old actress isn't the only one tipped as Clara's replacement. The BBC's Newsbeat compiled a list of favorites to take on the role opposite Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor.
Among them are "Game of Thrones" stars Rose Leslie (Ygritte) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark). Williams is already set to appear in "Doctor Who" season 9 for a mysterious role.
Although "Harry Potter's" Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) is not a favorite, "a number of bookies are offering odds on him." Melling is reportedly grandson to Patrick Troughton. Whovians may know him as the Second Doctor.
Also mentioned by the bookies is Alex Kingston's River Song who is set to come back for the Christmas Special potentially for a larger story arc.
Surely, there's no need to speculate on a new companion beyond "Doctor Who" season 9? Perhaps Jenna Coleman knows who will take over Clara after she leaves the show?
"No, I know nothing, absolutely nothing," the 29-year-old actress told Entertainment Weekly.
"Once you're out, you're out!"
After much speculation, Coleman confirmed her departure from "Doctor Who" last week. She has reportedly been cast in the titular role of the upcoming ITV drama "Victoria," that focuses on the early years of the British monarch's reign.
In the meantime, catch Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald on "Doctor Who" season 9 which returns with episode 2 "The Witch's Familiar" on Sept. 26.
