Over 2 million dehumidifiers are being recalled because they can overheat, smoke, and catch fire.
According to The International Business Times, the machines are connected to 46 fires resulting in over $2 million in property damage.
All of the affected appliances were manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances, however, they have a variety of brand names which include: Danby, De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima.
The appliances were sold at major retailers nationwide including Home Depot, Kmart and Lowe's between January 2005 and August. 52,000 were also sold in Canada. No injuries have been reported as a result of the fires.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising people to discontinue the use of their dehumidifier because is create fire and burn hazards for them..
"Consumers should stop using this product unless otherwise instructed," the commission said in a release on the Gree website. "It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product."
Those who have the appliances can contact Gree at (866) 853-2802 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday-Friday, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET. They can also go online. Refunds are also available.
20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, 65 and 70-pint dehumidifiers Gree said in a release. Those with the affected dehumidifiers can put their product brand name, model number, and date code into the Gree website so they can determine what appliance is included in the call back.
"The brand name and the pint capacity are printed on the front of the dehumidifier. The model number and date code are printed on a sticker on the back, front or side of the unit."
