Prince William Leaves British Military to Devote Time to Charity Work and Conservation Issues

| By

Prince William is leaving the British military to devote more time to his charities.

According to The New York Times, the Prince will end his over seven-year tenure as a guards officer, and pilot in the British army.

"The duke will work closely with a foundation he has established with his wife and with his younger brother, Prince Harry," said an official statement reported by The Times. "He will expand his work in the field of conservation, particularly in respect of endangered species. The duke will continue to work with his charities on issues relating to children and young people, veterans and serving members of the armed forces."

The news is not only a career move for the prince, but also a change in his major lifestyle, which comes a few months after his wife the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, gave birth to the couple's first child on July 22.

The change would discontinue the Prince's isolation of the couple's life on the Welsh island of Anglesey, where he is a helicopter search and rescue pilot, and also Duke of Cambridge. The Prince was planning to take a year to transition between the moves, and would make a formal announcement within the next year.

Prince William is not serving in the British military anymore having made his last scheduled search and rescue shift Tuesday.

"He has undertaken a total of 156 search-and-rescue operations, resulting in 149 people being rescued," the statement said.

He and the Duchess of Cambridge are expected to move into their official residence at Kensington Palace in the coming weeks The Times reported.

Prince William started his military training at the country's leading military academy, Sandurst.
