Foggy conditions caused a 130 vehicle pileup in the United Kingdom Thursday leaving dozens injured.
According to BBC News, firefighters hurried to free people who were stuck inside their vehicles as a result of the crash which happened on the New Kingsferry Bridge in Sheppey, located in the southeast English county of Kent. At least six people needed to be cut out using hydraulic cutting equipment.
There were at least eight serious injuries and 60 minor injuries according to police, BBC News reported. Thirty-five patients had been taken to six area hospitals by the middle of the day Thursday.
The accident occurred at 7:15 a.m. and lasted for 10 minutes because cars and trucks slammed into one another.
Jaime Emmett, a 19-year-old student who was involved in the accident, told the BBC she slowed her vehicle down but a van hit her from behind, causing her to run into another car in front.
"All I could hear was the cars smashing in front of each other and I could not know how far ahead the accident was," Emmett said.
Martin Stammers told BBC, he managed to avoid the crash, but then stopped his vehicle to run back along the bridge with his son and advise others to slow down.
"For 10 minutes afterward, all we could hear was screeching, cars thudding into each other, lorries crashing," Later, a woman came up to us sobbing saying, 'thank you, thank you, you saved my life.'"
People who witnessed the debacle said the visibility measured out to about 65 feet or 20 meters. There was also large amounts of twisted metal as a result of the news.
A witness told Britain's Highway Agency drivers weren't using their lights on the 70 mph bridge. The bridge will remain closed for the rest of Thursday.
