A police officer died Wednesday morning while serving a high-risk search-and-seizure warrant.
According to television station WBAL-TV, 13-year veteran Jason Schnieder was shot several times while he went from room-room with other officers looking for a 16 year-old in a home in Catonsville, Md. The teenager was wanted in a shooting in the area last week police said, according to WBAL-TV.
Schneider reportedly turned a corner and was shot several times police told WBAL-TV. The officer who had a decade of experience in the department's tactical unit returned fire and shot the suspect who is still in critical condition police said.
"He was a leader within that unit. It's a terrible loss for Baltimore County," Baltimore County police chief James Johnson told CBS Baltimore. "His noble work is greatly appreciated."
Twenty teenagers were reportedly living in the house at the time of the shooting neighbors told CBS Baltimore. There have also been similar incidents.
"During a well-prepared police event, Officer Schneider was killed in the line of duty and we deeply mourn his loss," County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said in a statement to WBAL-TV. "I can only tell you that we don't always appreciate what our police do for us every day but it's times like this when we know how grateful we are for their bravery and their sacrifice. He did what he and every other police officer in this department do."
Police are looking into the source of the guns used, and other circumstances of the incident Johnson said The Baltimore Sun reported. Johnson said officers went inside and saw people running outside of the home that knew they were law enforcement officials when they entered the house
Schneider is survived by his wife and two children.
