Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi is back from the hospital after falling ill during a parliament debate according to Yahoo News.
Gandhi was helped out of Lok Sabha or the house of the people Monday evening by her son, Rahul, and colleagues and taken by a car to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in New Delhi Yahoo News reported.
An official from the party told reporters Gandhi had a slight viral fever, but was now well.
"Madam Gandhi is home now," he said. "She is perfectly fine."
Gandhi, originally born in Italy, has served a smaller role in public since she went for treatment abroad for an unknown illness in 2011 Yahoo News reported.
The Congress Party tends to treat information about Gandhi's health very exclusively. Many medical reports however said she was treated for cancer at New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center that year.
According to media reports, Gandhi was a participant in a parliament debate about a plan to providing cheaper food to over two-thirds of India's poor when she became ill
"It's time to take the historic step," Gandhi said during the debate. "It is my fervent appeal that we shall pass this unanimously."
The food program, which is touted as one of the world's largest welfare programs would ensure India's poor are not left behind as the country emerges as a power on the economic front Yahoo News reported. Critics feel the program will put a strain on government finances especially during a period of time when the economy has slowed Yahoo News reported.
Gandhi became president of the Congress party in the years after 1991 assasination of her husband and former prime minister Rajic Gandhi.
According to Yahoo News, the food security bill, passed two hours after Gandhi and her son left parliament. The legislation now goes to the Rajya Sabha or Council of States elected by the states' assemblies Yahoo News reported.
