Condominiums at a luxury resort near Disney World collapsed into a gigantic 100-foot sinkhole near Disney World early Monday according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Guests staying at the Summer Bay Resort located in Clermon, Fla. had 10 to 15 minutes to evacuate the structure Sunday morning the Sentinel reported.
"My heart sunk. I was sick to my stomach," resort president Paul Caldwell told the Sentinel who received a call after 11 p.m. Sunday that the structure was falling. "No doubt there would've been injuries if they hadn't gotten the building evacuated."
While there were no reported injuries, several fleeing guests had to leave behind all their belongings, which included medications, the Sentinel reported.
Thirty-percent of the three-story building reportedly collapsed around 3 a.m. Monday Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar told reporters. According to the Sentinel, guests who had to vacate were placed into other buildings.
Caldwell told the Sentinel the displaced guests were relocated to other buildings; 16 people also had to leave a building adjacent to the collapsed condo the Sentinel reported.
Security guard Richard Shanley told the Sentinel he alerted guests of the news.
"While you are running by, pieces of the building are falling down behind you," he said. "So you just do what you can and get out. "
Shanley said guests were scared the structure might cave in.
"Kids were crying," he said. "They were saying, 'We don't want to get trapped here. Mommy, we're on vacation. We're here to have fun. This is not what we expected. We don't want to get trapped here.'"
The building consists of 24 units which, according to the Sentinel, had 20 people residing in it at the time of the accident.
The resort has re-opened the Sentinel reported.
