Teddy Sears' Jay Garrick made his debut in the third "The Flash" season 2 trailer promo where he is seen breaking the bad news to Barry Allen (Grant Gustin).
Jay Garrick is the first ever to take on the mantle of the Flash and this means he has seen everything. What is his state of mind with all that experience? Has he been corrupted?
He may be wearing a darker tone of red as seen in "The Flash" season 2 trailer promo but that does not mean his personality also went darker. However, his way of dealing with what's going on might not sit well with Barry instantly.
"There's a little condescension from Jay," Kreisberg said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "Jay is a little bit more world-weary and he's seen a lot. He's been The Flash for a while, so he's a little further along in his career. He's seen a lot of darkness, and it's jaded him a little bit. He thinks Barry can be a bit naïve about the way the world works."
Garrick and Allen will start their relationship on a bad note but as the season progresses, they will realize that they are there to learn from each other.
"One of Barry's greatest gifts - and truly it's one of Grant's greatest gifts, too - is he's got such an infectious energy and such a purity of heart that he makes you want to be a better person," Kreisberg added.
"As much as Barry learns from Jay about being The Flash, Jay learns just as much about being a good person from Barry."
In previous interviews, Kreisberg teased Jay Garrick will take over Prof. Harrison Wells' spot as the guide of Central City's Scarlet Speedster.
"Jay Garrick is obviously integral to the Flash mythology," Kreisberg said during a panel in last July's San Diego Comic-Con. "He was the original Flash and he's never really been portrayed to our knowledge in live action.
"Now that we've established our Flash we thought it was interesting to bring on the original Flash and create a brand new relationship for Barry to have. We're super excited about it."
