Police throughout the United States are cautioning women to be cautious of "sliders" at gas stations or people who go into unlocked cars to take items while people are pumping gas. KPRC reported.
"They say it's sliding because they're sliding below the eye level of the door," Houston, TX police officer Jim Woods told Houston television station KPRC. "Victims frequently don't realize that they've been robbed."
Woods said the thieves don't want to start any trouble, and are only interested in a victim's possessions KPRC reported.
"They're not looking for a confrontation...," he told KPRC. "They just want the property, because they know it's being left abandoned and you're not paying enough attention," he said.
According to KPRC, video surveillance shows the culprits in action throughout the country. They appear to be done at day care centers, and gas stations where women pump gas into their vehicles and don't know who is around them KPRC reports.
"They are so concentrated on this that they just don't notice when the sliders get quietly into the passenger side of their car to grab a purse," he told the station.
Houston Police said there's been a rise in "sliders" at gas stations in the last three years, and are advising people to lock car doors and close all windows no matter how far away from their vehicle they may be, KPRC reports.
According to CBS News.com, police are advising people to make sure purses are out sight, or hold on to them where ever they go.
