Owners of the Roadster 2.0 or higher now have the option of buying the Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade which brings more range to the sporty EV via a new and improved battery.
According to Tesla, the new battery stores around 40 percent more energy compared to the original one.
"There is a slight increase in the battery weight but the total range increases over 35 percent from the original Roadster."
As GreenCarReports noted, this means the Roadster 3.0 upgrade will bring a 74kWh battery and 330 miles or more of range.
Tesla is offering the upgrade for $29,000 which includes labor and logistics. The automaker started taking reservations last week and requires a $5,000 deposit.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based automaker assured customers that they don't intend to make a buck from them.
"The reason the cost per kWh is higher than a Model S batter is due to the almost entirely hand-built, low-volume (only 2 or 3 per week) nature of Roadster battery packs," the company explained.
But the Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade doesn't stop with the battery. First announced in Dec. 2014, the full kit also includes improvements to aerodynamics and rolling resistance, according to GCR.
"The additional elements would add to the new pack to boost overall range to 400 miles under certain conditions," the website said.
Roadster owners at the Tesla Motors Club forum are mulling over the upgrade. Some are wondering if waiting for Tesla's Gigafactory to churn out the battery upgrade at a lower cost would be a wiser decision.
Others are excited about it and have already ordered the upgrade although some have expressed concern over the warranty. One user who called Tesla did mention that the battery includes a three-year warranty.
Another one reportedly talked to a Tesla rep who said that the Roadster 3.0 battery upgrade could be purchased for less for those under the Battery Replacement Option.
Replacement batteries for the Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade will reportedly begin production this month with deliveries varying by location.
