‘Regular’ Tesla Model X Not As Pricey As Signature Series; Sept. 29 Launch for Top-End Variant

| By

Last week, it was announced that the Tesla Model X Signature Series will begin deliveries on Sept. 29. But many were shocked of its high starting price of $132,000 which CEO Elon Musk had to clarify.

Musk took to Twitter to clarify the reason for the price:

By contrast, the Signature series Model X retails from $132,000 to $144,000, plus $1,200 DOC, according to InsideEVs.

According to the vehicle's configurator spotted by members of the Tesla Motors Club, the Tesla Model X Signature Series comes standard with autopilot convenience features, smart air suspension, powered liftgate, ventilated leather seats, independently-operable second row seats, third-row seats that fold flat and high fidelity satellite radio.

These are in addition to Model X standard equipment such as parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, automatic keyless entry and a rear spoiler that retracts automatically.

"The initial run of Model X Signature Series cars will use a 90-kWh battery pack, with a claimed output of a stagering 762 HP," ConsumerReports said.

EPA estimates put the range at 240 miles. 70-kWh and 85-kWh version will reportedly follow soon.

For $1,000 more, customers can add a heated steering wheel and heated seats in the second and third row with the "Subzero Weather Package."

The "Towing Package" adds a removable hitch receiver rated at 5,000 pounds towing capacity for $750.

And as Musk said previously, the Model X SUV can be equipped with the "Ludicrous Speed Ugrade" which drops the EV's 0-60 time to 3.2 seconds - from 3.8 seconds on the standard model - for $10,000.

Those who made the $40,000 deposit for the Tesla Model X Signature Series will be the first owners of the electric SUV. Deliveries begin on Sept. 29, Musk tweeted. Customers who reserved the standard Model X follow after.

"For those who order now, Tesla estimates deliveries will be in early 2016 based on the current queue," CR said.
