While Naughty Dog has yet to set a release date for the upcoming "The Last of Us 2," new reports suggest that there will be new characters to be introduced.
According to Cinema Blend Naughty Dog might opt to introduce new lead characters that could be in direct connection to Joel and Ellie's story.
"It's possible he won't want to compromise that ending with a sequel," the publication reported. "The development team at Naughty Dog might opt for a new story with never-before-seen characters instead."
While he insisted that he has no knowledge about the upcoming "The Last of Us 2," Troy Baker, the voice actor of Joel, hinted details that suggest to a change of lead character for the sequel, Eurogamer reported.
"I know nothing," he answered when asked about the game's release date at Indy PopCon.
"I don't know if we're gonna do another one or not. If we do, then I trust Neil [Druckmann, creative director] and Bruce [Straley, game director] and everyone at Naughty Dog to tell a story that needs to be told."
He then suggested to the panel what he wants to see when "The Last of Us 2" release date comes.
"You know, spoiler, when you go from the prologue and then credits and then cut to 20 years later, you see a completely different guy," Baker said.
Meanwhile, the voice actor of the villain in the game, Nolan North confirmed to during a Q&A panel at MetroCon in Tampa, Florida that "The Last of Us 2" is indeed in the works according to Game Rant.
"I know they're doing a 'Last of Us 2' but my character in Last of Us kind of had an untimely demise."
After admitting to Game Spot that the sequel is still "on ice," director Bruce Straley revealed that the developers are actually planning "The Last of Us 2" already.
"We're 110 percent in Uncharted 4 territory now," Straley said. "Blinders on, make this awesome."
"We totally get it, because we have those same feelings as well. We have brainstormed sequel ideas for 'The Last of Us,' and we've brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on 'Uncharted 4.'"
Meanwhile, VC Post claimed that Naughty Dog will most likely going to announce the game's release date once "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" and "The Last of Us" movie adaptation is finalized.
"Once 'Uncharted 4' and 'The Last of Us' movie are taken care of, however, it might be a different story altogether," the publication claimed. "Unless Naughty Dog wants to move onto an entirely new IP, they might finally get around to giving us the 'The Last of Us' sequel that so many of the game's fans are asking for."
