After Louis D'Esposito of Marvel announced that they've wrapped up the production of "Captain America: Civil War," director Roland Emmerich revealed that they have also finished filming "Independence Day 2."
The 59-year-old filmmaker made the announcement via Instagram and Twitter where he posted a photo of a double rainbow from their movie set and captioned it, "and that's a wrap on @IDResurgance. Thank you Albuquerque, New Mexico, you've been amazing."
Officially called "Independence Day: Resurgence," this is a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster film which starred Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. Unfortunately, the 46-year-old actor won't be reprising his role because they can't afford his talent fee.
"Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," Emmerich told NY Daily News.
The director also revealed that half of the cast will come from the first film and the other half are new. Newcomers include Liam Hemsworth, who is more known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in "The Hunger Games" film series.
Even if Will Smith isn't part of the film anymore, his character's legacy will live on through Jessie Usher. According to Movie Pilot, the 23-year-old actor will play the son of Captain Steven Hiller in the sequel.
Apart from Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe will also be joining the cast of "Independence Day 2."
The 22-year-old actress recently shared a photo of her together with her co-stars Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman on Twitter and captioned it, "What a group!! Going to miss the #IDR family." Maika Monroe has been romantically linked to Liam Hemsworth ever since the two were caught getting cozy at Roland Emmerich's bash.
"His hand was on her butt as she was grinding into him and they were making out at the bar," an insider told Us Weekly. "Liam was draped all over her. It was so PDA and in-your-face."
Miley Cyrus' ex-fiancé and blonde beauty were also spotted getting some drinks in Malibu a few months ago. However, the rumored couple haven't confirmed nor denied their relationship yet.
Since Roland Emmerich and the rest of the cast have finished filming "Independence Day: Resurgence," then there is a chance that fans can see a teaser trailer coming out next month. The sequel is scheduled for release on June 24, 2016.
