Celebrities + Twitter/Facebook = A-listers taking a stand on marriage equality. Those of us on social media platforms have been seeing red the last few days as many users changed their profile pictures to that of a giant red equal sign with a red background, but it wasn't long before several big names got behind the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and posted the group's logo on their own highly followed pages.
As Padma Lakshmi, Jessica Seinfeld and Felicy Huffman showed their support with a profile picture update, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres posted the following on her Facebook page, "Today I'm thinking of the Supreme Court. I hope they remember what makes our country great, and support equality for all."
Actor, George Takei, taking the more humorous route, posted a picture of southern chef, Paula Deen, photoshopped on top of the logo with the saying "It's Like 2 sticks of butter, y'all!" Within 24 hours of the picture being posted, it garnered 98,000+ likes and 41,500+ shares.
Singer, Beyonce, an outspoken supporter of gay marriage, took the more personalized approach and handwrote her thoughts, while playing on the lyrics of one of her song "Single Ladies", by saying, "If you like it, you should be able to put a ring on it. #WeWillUniteForMarriageEquality". The songstress also posted the HRC logo with the hash tag of "Marry Who You Love".
Oscars host, Seth MacFarlane, in true comedic style, had this to say via Twitter, "Surpreme Court, stop acting like cowards. Now IS the time for broad ruling to make the leap into the 20th century. -Sincerely, the 21st "
As celebrities and average Joes alike work to influence and make an impact through social media, the outcome of marriage equality ultimately rests in the hands of justices' as arguments over the Defense of Marriage Act have concluded.
