[WATCH] Ipad IOS 9 Multitasking In Action! Slide Over, Split View, Picture-In-Picture Explained

| By

The upcoming iOS 9 update is set to reinvigorate Apple's iPad line-up with a range of new features which includes multitasking.

Back in May, 9to5 Mac said the Cupertino tech giant intended to bring the said feature along with iOS 8's debut last year. Ultimately though, "the feature was deemed too unpolished for public consumption."

Now, it seems Apple is ready to introduce multitasking with the next major iOS overhaul. See it in action courtesy of MacRumors in the video below:

As the website noted, iPad iOS 9 multitasking is divided into three different features: Slide Over, Picture-in-Picture and Split View.

Reportedly, swiping left or right within any app activates Slide Over. This brings up a small side pane that displays another app beside the first one which will take up 1/3 of the screen.

Keep sliding towards the middle of the screen and Split View is activated. According to MacRumors, this feature "displays two apps side-by-side, with each app taking up half of the screen."

"In Split View, both apps can be used at the same time and controlled independently, so you can, for example, browse in Safari while simultaneously scrolling through your chats in Messages."

Lastly, Picture-in-Picture allows users to watch videos or be in a video call while using other apps. It is activated by tapping on the iPad's Home button which sends the video to the corner.

Despite the iPad 2 being able to run iOS 9, MacWorld said users will need newer iPad models to make use of the update's multitasking feature due to the processing power it requires.

Slide Over and Picture-in-Picture is said to work on the iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 2 and iPad mini 3. Split View works on the iPad Air 2.

Ipad iOS 9 multitasking is currently available in the update's public beta phase. As MacWorld noted, it is still subject to change before the consumer version's official launch later this year.
