Floyd Mayweather - Andre Berto fight is happening in barely three weeks.
That means also less than three weeks until the undefeated (so far) American boxer hangs his gloves. Pretty Boy, as he is fondly called, told in many interviews that the September 12 fight in Las Vegas will be his last. From there on, he will not step on the ring anymore.
WBA Welterweight Champion Keith Thurman does not believe any word of it. He believes that after the Floyd Mayweather - Andre Berto fight, the previous will only leave his promoter Showtime Sports and not retire.
"There is no evidence that it [Berto] will be his final opponent," Thurman said in an interview with Boxing News. "It's the final fight of his Showtime contract that he signed three years ago. That is what it is officially, it does not mean it is the final fight of Floyd Mayweather's career - that is up to him."
Although he is skeptical about Floyd retiring after September 12, Thurman believes Floyd Mayweather Jr - Andre Berto is something to be staged so Pretty Boy can prove himself. He thinks Floyd's legacy has already been cemented after fight with Manny Pacquiao.
"As far as him fighting Berto, he just got done fighting Manny Pacquiao. I'm learning, just from my little bit of time of being in the spotlight - and trying to entertain everybody in the world of boxing - that at the end of the day, no matter who you fight, you don't please everybody."
Floyd Mayweather - Andre Berto fight does not receive the same reception as last May's Floyd-Pacman bout. Many bigger names tried to court Mayweather but to no avail. If what Thurman is saying turn out to be true, then the likes of Amir Khan can keep their hopes up for the chance to square against this year's highest earning athlete.
