After a brief glimpse at last week's Unpacked event, a teaser video for the upcoming Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch has just been posted online which you can see below:
Right off the bat, one can't help but notice how different the Gear S2 is from the original Gear S.
SamMobile said the smartwatch will have a round display with dozens of watch faces to choose from and a fitness tracker to go along the usual smartwatch accoutrements such as a heart-rate sensor, stopwatch and a timer. Also seen in the video are the Gear S2's preloaded apps.
"These apps include a messaging app, a calling app, S Health, Nike+ Running, Settings, Calendar, S Voice and Weather."
News outlets, including Franchise Herald, have been reporting about Samsung's next-gen round smartwatch, then known as the Gear A.
Known internally as "Project Orbis," expected Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch specs include an Exynos 3472 dual-core processor, a Mali-400 GPU, 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. A 250mAh battery is expected to keep the wearable device online.
Allegedly, it will also have a 360 x 360p round Super AMOLED display although its size has yet to be confirmed.
Connectivity options will reportedly include Bluetooth LE as well as Wi-Fi and cellular in some variants, according to SamMobile. The Gear S2 is said to run on a new Tizen OS specifically designed for wearable devices.
Fans of the Apple Watch may note that the Gear S2 borrowed Cupertino's smartwatch's round icons.
"While Apple doesn't hold a patent on rounded icons, it's interesting that Samsung switched to rounded icons following the Apple Watch release," TechCrunch said.
At this point, not much is known about the upcoming Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch. But fans won't have to wait that long as the South Korean tech giant said it its Apple Watch rival's release date will be at IFA 2015 in Berlin on September 3.
