Recent "Scandal" TV series spoilers revealed most characters will be in terrible situation when the show returns next month.
While Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and Pres. Grant (Tony Goldwyn) are in cloud nine now that they are back in each other's arms, the other characters are busy dealing with their own troubles in "Scandal" season 5 premiere episode.
Most main characters are in low points of their lives, but none would probably be more miserable than the president's wife Mellie (Bellamy Young). She was kicked out by her husband and in the new season, everything will just get worse for her.
Young told TV Line that Mellie will be less self-indulgent in the new season. Although she is part of a senator slate come "Scandal" season 5 premiere, that is the last thing on her mind. All of her pain root from what happened in the last few episodes of the fourth season.
"That season finale pulled the rug out from under everyone, so I think everybody was pretty happy that we were starting back immediately after and getting to go into those moments" Young said adding there will be no time jump in "Scandal" season 5 premiere.
"There is no greater pain than losing a child, but she's absolutely devastated," she shared. "She's having to regroup, but she's sort of by herself completely, because everyone is alienated at this point. She's never going to give up without a fight - I mean, she's Mellie! - but a lot of options are no longer open to her."
Young then explained that Mellie could have just left Grant but her love for him is too strong to do that.
"If she didn't love him, that would be the better plan," Young conceded. "She hates herself for loving him, but she loves him! Oh, her life would be so much simpler if she didn't! But she does."
"Scandal" season 5 premiere is on Sept. 24.
