A three and a half minute video of a girl being brutally beaten up by another teenager has been viewed over a million times on Facebook, according to the U.K. publication The Telegraph.
The 15-year-old responsible for the assault in the video, which was filmed in Cowdenbeath, Fife, has been charged by police, according to BuzzFeed News.
“Thank you to those concerned members of the public who have contacted us today regarding a video of an assault in Cowdenbeath, which is currently on social media. We are actively investigating the matter,” a police spokesman stated.
The attacker is heard stating that her victim, who is reportedly thought to be 13, is “pure sharking like a leaf,” before punching her in the face in front of a crowd.
The video, which has since been removed, was reportedly shared on Monday.
Although the reasons for the assault still remain unclear, in the video, the attacker reportedly claims that it was retribution for the victim’s father making an anonymous allegation to police about her own father.
This is reportedly only one of more than 20 cases in the last four years in which teenagers were either arrested, charged, convicted or all three, according to research done by BuzzFeed News.
Many have condemned, not only the attacker, but the onlookers who chose to film the incident rather than help the victim.
“The first thing they think to do in a fight is grab their phone to film it, not call police? What the hell is wrong with kids now?” commented Facebook user Kimberley Czupil.
Jessica Walton simply wrote, “These children are monsters these days.”
