Is A ‘Harry Potter’ Sequel Possible? Chris Columbus Wants To Explore The Missing 18 Years!

| By

If the response for the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them" trilogy as well as the play that isn't prequel is anything to go by, Potterheads around the world would definitely go watch another "Harry Potter" sequel.

Director Chris Columbus, himself, said he would love to direct another Potter film.

"I would love to go back and do another one," he reportedly told Sirius XM 105 (Entertainment Weekly radio). "Not Fantastic Beasts as much, which I think is going to be amazing, but I would love to do another movie with those three characters - Harry, Hermione, and Ron."

Columbus directed the first two instalments of the epic fantasy saga. According to Slash Film, the "light and more whimsical" films helped "set the stage for what would mature into a much more serious fantasy adventure."

With Voldemort gone, however, what would the helmer focus on for a possible ninth Harry Potter film?

"I'm just fascinated about what happened to them after the end of the last movie, because then they cut to 18 years ahead," he continued. "There's 18 years there of great Harry Potter stories."

The last film, "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2," cut straight to Harry, Ron and Hermione sending off their children to Hogwarts on Platform 9 3/4.

It would be interesting to see the mysterious 18 years being played out on screen or even in books. JK Rowling herself released a short story that allowed fans a glimpse into Harry's life after Hogwarts. Pottermore was also a great outlet for followers who wanted more after the franchise and books ended.

However, Columbus' first obstacle would have to be getting permission from the author herself. With JK Rowling busy writing a screenplay for the fantasy adventure's spinoff, would she be willing to give the green light for a possible "Harry Potter" sequel?

"There has to be a great story in Harry's life at that point," Columbus reportedly told io9 in an interview. "Hopefully [J.K. Rowling] will maybe think about doing that. Even if I wouldn't make a movie, I'd still like to read those stories."
