First seen in 2012, it was supposed to start production a year later but has been mired by delays since. But now, the Tesla Model X release date has been confirmed for September 30 or the end of Q3 2015.
The Model X is an all-electric SUV from Tesla.
"Its greater suspension travel and all-wheel drive should make it popular for those who drive on rough roads or in inclement conditions, while the seating for seven could make it an interesting choice for family hauling," CNET said.
According to the website, a configuration tool for the Model X should go online on Tesla's website "in two or three weeks," per CEO Elon Musk.
Adding a new model to its lineup did pose challenges to the Palo Alto, Calif.-based automaker. As Motor Authority reported, Musk said Tesla could miss its goal of delivering 55,000 cars this year due to "adding Model X production to the company's plant in Fremont, Calif."
Still, it won't affect the Tesla Model X release date at the end of September which is good news for the more than 20,000 who have already reserved the upcoming electric SUV.
Some may think it's the Model X's unconventional falcon-wing doors that swing up are what make things difficult but what Musk shared may surprise them.
"Our biggest challenges are with the second-row seat," the Tesla CEO said at a conference call with analysts as reported by Bloomberg.
"It's an amazing, a sculptural work of art, but a very tricky thing to get right."
Despite being a "challenging car to build," the 44-year-old tech entrepreneur said the Model X "is an amazing vehicle" which, he thinks "will blow people away."
Although a Tesla Model X release date has been confirmed, pricing for the electric SUV has not been announced. But according to CNET, CEO Elon Musk said it will have "very similar" pricing to the Model S which starts at $50,000 after tax credits and gas savings.
