The BBC, executive producers Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss, as well as the actors themselves have been dropping hints of a "darker" life for Benedict Cumberbatch's onscreen alter-ego Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming instalment.
However, rumors recently started flying around that "Sherlock" season 4 is getting cancelled!
The Stately Harold allegedly quoted Gatiss, who also plays the elder Holmes brother, Mycroft, as saying that the BBC has decided to let the internationally-acclaimed show go.
"I have some bad news regarding Sherlock," the paper supposedly quoted the showrunner as saying. "I know that we have promised you a fourth season time and time again, but at this point in time, this is not a prioritization that BBC can make in the near future."
He reportedly added, "The team has worked hard to try and coordinate this, but unfortunately the studio has decided that it is best to let the project go. The entire cast is incredibly sorry that we won't be able to fulfil our promises but we hope that you will enjoy that Christmas special that will still air this year. That is the last you will see of Sherlock in its current form."
According to Lewis Jefferies of MoviePilot, "Sherlock" season 4 being cancelled is "100% not cancelled."
"Everything said is fake and there to wind Sherlock fans up. Season 4 of Sherlock has been planned for ages. There is no way they would cancel now," the article continued, adding that according to news, filming will begin in Spring of 2016.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will come back to the small screen with the "Sherlock" Christmas special which will be set in the Victorian era.
Although it's set in the original timeline of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series, fans of the show have been used to seeing the duo in their 21st century world.
Do you think "Sherlock" season 4 will get cancelled now after all the hints dropped by Moffat and Gatiss?
