Sony Project Morpheus Gameplay To Be ‘Concentrated And Concise;’ PS4 VR Headset Debuts In China

| By

Although the PS4 VR headset was meant for gaming, Sony Project Morpheus gameplay won't particularly target marathon gaming sessions hardcore gamers are used to. Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden said as much when he spoke to FOX Business.

"I think the VR experience really befits a more concentrated and concise gaming experience," Layden said.

This is in contrast to "50 hours of gameplay" that most non-casual players are accustomed to. The Sony exec also said that games may first use Morpheus in a mode or level. More sales for the PS4 VR headset would make way for exclusive titles, he added.

The upside is that VR games for the Project Morpheus many not cost more than their PS4 counterparts. But that's not to say gamers looking for more content will be left wanting.

As VR Focus noted, there will still be room for more hardcore Sony Project Morpheus gameplay. The website pointed to the fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) "RIGS: Mechanised Combat League" revealed at E3 in June.

Another VR FPS gamers can look forward to is Insomniac Games' "Edge of Nowhere" which "[looks] to stand up to the likes of 'Uncharted' and other action titles."

Of course, Sony is also exploring Morpheus' potential in other forms of entertainment such as film and video. Last month, Franchise Herald reported on a collaboration between the Japanese tech giant and IMAX to promote the Joseph Gordon-Levitt film "The Walk."

Meanwhile, Sony hosted the Chinajoy Expo and Conference in Shanghai, China where the both the PlayStation 4 console and Morpheus VR headset were showcased, according to VR Focus.

No new hardware or software announcements were made during the event although there were a handful of Project Morpheus demos including SCE London's "The Deep" and "Playroom VR." Check out NeoGaf user Gskyace's account of the event here.

The lack of updates is "not surprising," VR Focus said. Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida did say that more games will be shown at the 2015 Tokyo Game Show in Japan in September and the Paris Games Week in France in October.

The PS4 VR headset's pricing and exact release date has not been revealed at this time but expect more Sony Project Morpheus gameplay at the said events and at GameStop Expo 2015.
