[WATCH] HTC Vive VR Headset Release Date Reaffirmed For This Year; Valve Rolls Out VR Interface

| By

The HTC Vive VR headset's release date later this year remains on schedule with more news in the virtual reality device to come out in October. The company's executive director of marketing Jeffrey Gattis said this much at the device's on-going world tour.

"We're targeting October for an announcement of our consumer version where we'll unveil what the actual final idea looks like, the final controllers and should have a pretty decent view of what our content line-up will be like at launch," Gattis said in the video above.

"The Vive's development is progressing quickly," as PC World noted.

It was only in March that HTC and Valve announced their partnership on the VR headset. This was followed by developer kits which started shipping to developers and movie studios in June. HTC said the consumer version of the Vive VR will be ready by the end of 2015.

As for the HTC Vive VR headset's release date, Gattis said they remain committed to what they said earlier.

"We've made the public commitment that we're gonna have a consumer product in [the] market before the end of this calendar year. So it's a really big statement for us, we're driving aggressively toward that and I think really in Q1 of next year you'll start to see this ramp up."

While the Taiwanese smartphone maker continues development on the Vive, Valve has launched a new VR interface for the device called Dashboard. It came by way of the latest Steam Client Beta update and SteamVR [beta].

"Our goals for the Dashboard are to provide users with easy access to both system-level features and contextually-relevant content while in VR," Valve said in a blog post.

"And because this whole thing runs on a PC, we want to create a space where any software can be accessed while in VR. The Dashboard makes this possible with Overlays, the applications it hosts."

Right now, the new SteamVR interface is "pretty basic" but the "Half-Life" developer said it will add new features in the coming weeks.

The HTC Vive VR headset release date is set for later this year but it won't go on sale until Q1 2016.
