A woman died on a flight headed to Texas, police confirmed.
The flight left Sao Paolo, Brazil, at 1:12 a.m. bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. But after the 25-year-old became ill on board, it was diverted to Houston, where it landed about 2 1/2 hours later at 6:34 a.m.
A doctor and the flight crew treated the woman, who eventually died onboard.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said that while onboard deaths are not common, it is not clear how many there are a year.
The passenger was declared dead after the plane landed, authorities said.
Homicide detectives were called to investigate and an autopsy will be done, Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said.
The name of the passenger was not immediately released.
