Comcast's Google Fiber challenge: Beat our 2GB per second internet speed!
"Gigabit Pro," Comcast's internet service is the company's answer to Google Fiber, recently went live earlier this month, promising to offer an internet speed that enables users to download HD movies in 20 seconds.
Comcast's incredible offering poses to Google Fiber a big challenge - a threat, if you may.
Comcast's Google Fiber challenge is said to be 200 times faster - that kind of speed enables users to download a 15GB video game in 1 minute, a 600 MB TV episode in 2 seconds and a 150 MB mp3 album in less than one second.
"We believe in Fast. That's why we've increased out broadband speeds 15 times in the past 13 years," the Gigabit Pro website reads. "We continue that commitment today by introducing Multi-Gig speeds to more people in more neighborhoods than any other network. Now with 2 gigabits of speed from XFINITY, you'll experience fast like never before."
While these features may definitely give Google a run for its money, it has one tiny little flaw - Gigabit Pro is outrageously expensive.
While Google Fiber offers users a symmetrical gigabit connection for $70 per month and an installation fee of $300 for a one-year contract, Comcast's Gigabit Pro costs $300 monthly, iSchool Guide reports.
The price would not have been so bad if it was a part of a complete bundle of services including a TV and telephone but the Gigabit Pro network is only avaialable in standalone packages. This means that subscribers need to pay for additional services.
On the other hand, interested consumers may avail of Comcast's promotional price for Gigabit Pro. If you sign up for a three-year contract, you may have the Gigabit Pro for $159.
Gigabit Pro will be available in US cities like Atlanta and the San Franciso Bay Area. Over time, the company hopes to expand the services in other cities.
